First and foremost… We at Woolshed Eco Lodge acknowledge the traditional custodians of the great land we live in. We respect and understand the difficulties in recognizing this most recent date as a mile stone in the history of this land down under given the fact it is but a small page in the overall amazing story of this land and it’s unique and special relationship with it’s traditional custodians. We agree that it should be a date of reflection and remembrance with a focus on acknowledgement, healing and inclusion leading into a better future for all the peoples of this land.
Join us for some activities on Australia Day, the 26th of January!
Woolshed fun!
At the Eco Lodge you’ll find FREE BARBEQUE and MÖLKKY TOURNAMENT (a social game where you throw wooden skittles) at 6 pm in the garden. Bread and sausages are on the house, feel free to bring your own food or beer if you like.
Afterwards you can roll down to the Esplanade and get a glimpse of the nightlife, as the pubs are usually pretty bloody good today!
But before that, there are plenty of day activities:
Get old!
The Historical Village, just a short walk from the Woolshed, is open from 9.30 am – 4.30 pm, and it’s only a 2 dollar entry on Australia Day!
Here you can pet alpacas, learn how to make rope, shell corn, ride a tractor for free or participate in competitions like thong throwing and cross cut sawing.
13 Zephyr Street, Scarness.
Scarness Market
From 7 am to 2 pm there is a market in Scarness Park (just walk straight down to the beach from the Woolshed, and the market will be on your left) with food stalls, live music and arts and crafts. The Fraser Coast Outriggers are also here, offering free rides in their 6-man canoe between 11.00am and 2.00pm. Just approach those members and ask to have a paddle and/or to ask anything about paddling!
Paddle it out!
If you feel like being active, try Stand Up Paddle Boarding! Hervey Bay Stand Up Paddle is operating from early morning at the Hervey Bay Sailing Club, Torquay beach, and conditions are looking great! Board hire + lesson is 25 dollars, book in advance by calling Graham 0488 787 875 or through Facebook.
If you’re into water activities, also try Watersport Café Aquavue in Torquay! Kayaks, catamarans, jetskis, SUP-boards – they have it all and they are OPEN on Australia Day! 🙂
Feeling bendy?
The sweet Ocean Tree Yoga Studio is open on Australia Day and offers a morning yoga session with Jess, 9.30 -10.30 am. Tell her you are from the Woolshed Eco Lodge and get the class for just 10 dollars (normally 15 dollars)!
Nightlife!
Aussies love to party on Oz Day, and you’re guaranteed to find some party people just walking down to the Esplanade or the beach.
Check out the Irish pub Hoolihans, The Beach House Hotel, Torquay Hotel!
The Beach House Hotel is throwing a big Aussie party with Best dressed prizes, thong throwing, and Pie & Lamington eating competitions from 1pm. Live music by Frank Benn & Red Betty from 4pm.
